Total fat accounts for about 33% of the total energy intake of Australian adults.

Although it has decreased in recent years, it’s still above the National Health and Medical Research Centre’s recommended maximum level of 10%. The major sources of saturated fatty acids in the adult diet are dairy milk, meat, pastries, cheese, potatoes (due to added fats) and butter.

According to the economic research firm BIS Shrapnel, food eaten away from home accounts for around 28% of the food expenditure in Australia with almost half of this expenditure being on fast foods.
